The road home starts with you!
Sunnyside Street Dogs is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) non-profit foster rescue dedicated to saving abandoned, abused, and neglected street dogs. We provide medical care, rehabilitation, foster placement, and adoption services to help Houston rescue dogs find safe, loving homes.
Sunnyside Street Dogs is a Houston-based nonprofit, foster-driven dedicated to saving abandoned, abused, and neglected street dogs throughout the Houston area. through fostering, rehabilitation, medical care and adoption programs, we work to give vulnerable dogs a second chance at life in safe and loving homes.
Our foster-based dog rescue relies heavily on volunteers, donations, and community support to help reduce the stray dog crisis in Houston while connecting rescue dogs with compassionate adopters and foster families.

Unlike traditional animal rescues or shelters, Sunnyside Street dogs is a foster-based rescue system. Dogs are placed in temporary foster homes where they receive care, socialization, medical treatment, and rehabilitation before adoption.
Foster care helps rescue dogs adjust to home environments, improves adoption success, and allows us to save more dogs throughout the Houston area.

Whether you want to adopt a rescue dog in Houston, become a foster parent, volunteer with a local non-profit, or donate to help homeless dogs, there are many ways to support Sunnyside Street Dogs and make a lifesaving impact in the Houston community.
Houston faces one of the largest stray dog crises in the country due to uncontrolled breeding, low spay/neuter rates, pet abandonment, and limited rescue resources. The city’s warm climate allows stray dogs to survive and reproduce year-round, leaving thousands of dogs frightened, homeless, and struggling to survive while shelters and rescues remain overwhelmed. Foster homes, adopters, and community support are critical to giving these dogs a second chance at a safe and loving life.
Our nonprofit dog rescue, founded by Mike Hood and Annie Hawthorne, is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming these dogs in need. Through foster, adoption, spay and neuter advocacy, and community support, we work to reduce dog homelessness in Houston and giving rescue dogs a second chance at life.
As a non-profit dog rescue in Houston, we rely entirely on donations to continue saving lives. Donations help cover emergency vet care, food and supplies, and spay/neuter services.
Every dollar goes directly toward helping our dogs in need!

Houston Pets Alive! Spay/Neuter Clinic - A high-volume, low-cost clinic serving both pets and rescue organizations. Pricing is income-friendly and based on weight, with bundled vaccine options available.
Texas Litter Control (Greater Houston Area) - A nonprofit low-cost veterinary group that now operates former Greater Good clinic services.

Many Houston rescue dogs arrive with untreated medical conditions caused by abandonment, neglect, injury, or life on the streets. Our Rescue provides veterinary care, vaccinations, spay and neuter services, heartworm treatment, injury recovery, nutritional support, and ongoing medical rehabilitation to help dogs heal physically before adoption.
Through partnerships with local veterinarians and dedicated foster homes, we give rescued dogs the medical attention, recovery time, and compassionate care they need to regain their health and prepare for a successful future.

Many rescue dogs coming off the streets or out of overcrowded shelters need time to decompress and rebuild confidence in a home environment. Through foster-based care, dogs are able to learn routines, socialization skills, leash confidence, crate training, and positive interactions with people and other animals.
Behavioral rehabilitation helps rescue dogs adjust emotionally, reduce stress, and better prepare for long-term success in adoptive homes. Foster hones also help our rescue understand each dog's personality, energy level, and individual needs to create better adoption matches.

Houston faces one of the largest homeless dog populations in the country, leaving local shelters and rescues, overwhelmed by the number of animals needing placement and care. Foster-based rescue helps expand lifesaving capacity by allowing dogs to live in temporary foster homes instead of crowded kennel environments while waiting for adoption.
A foster-based model also provides more individual care, better insight into a dog's behavior and personality, and improved adoption placement success. By relying on foster homes, volunteers, and community support, Houston rescue organizations are able to help more dogs safely transition from homelessness into permanent homes.

Miley was initially found abandoned in an apartment, where she was sadly starved before rescue. Because of this, treats and mealtimes are extra special to her now, and she truly enjoys them. She thrived in her foster home, learning what it meant to be loved and safe. She found her forever home! She’s now a champion couch potato who loves lounging by your side, enjoys short walks, and likes to play with her toys when she’s feeling spunky!

Andy’s story is one of true resilience and survival. He was adopted from the county shelter as a 10 week old healthy puppy. He was then returned at 10 months old, completely emaciated and clearly abused. He ended up on the euthanasia list due to overcrowding and his condition. Sunnyside Street Dogs Rescue was able to pull him just in the nick of time before he was put down. Andy found this forever family and is living his best life!

Pattie was surrendered to us by a Good Samaritan, who found her lying in a ditch on a rainy day. She was placed in a foster home. Pattie is a partially paralyzed Siberian Husky puppy. With intensive care and therapy, Pattie was starting to gain mobility in her back legs! She is able to run about 10-15 strides on her own. We believe with continued care & training, Pattie can live a very fulfilled life!
Her absolute favorite part of any day is running through the field. She gives so many kisses of gratitude! Patty found her forever family!
Every rescue dog has a different story, recovery journey, and path to adoption. Many of the Houston street dogs rescued through our foster based rescue program arrive with medical needs such as fear, malnutrition, or lack of socialization after living on the streets or in overcrowded shelters.
Through foster care, veterinary treatment, behavioral support, and consistent daily routines, many of these dogs gain confidence and successfully transition into adoptive homes. Success stories not only highlight the resilience of rescue dogs, but also the impact foster families, adopters, volunteers and community supporters have in helping homeless dogs throughout Houston.
